Villa to rival Arsenal for England keeper prospect

Jason Steele - Top England's young keeper

Aston Villa boss Gerard Houllier will fight Arsenal for keeper Jason Steele - if Middlesbrough cash in on the England under-21 keeper.

Houllier has been tipped off by his staff that Steele could go on to rival Joe Hart as his country’s number one and he is on red alert to improve that department.

Steele has been strongly linked with Arsenal, who have been tracking him closely lately, although Boro insist he is one prize asset they want to keep despite their crippling payroll.

Houllier is looking for at least one new keeper as he revamps his side, with veteran Brad Friedel coming towards the end and fellow American Brad Guzan yet to impress.

Villa have been chasing Rangers and Scotland star Allan McGregor, but that would not stop them joining the Steele manhunt when the market for him opens - which may yet happen next month.

The Gunners are willing to go to £4million for Steele, with Villa also prepared to get out Randy Lerner’s cheque book as he ticks the right boxes in terms of his age and the fact he is English.

Boro have said in public that they will not let one of their home-grown starlets go but boss Tony Mowbray has been working on potential replacements if the money becomes too much to refuse.
